About the EMT Basic Class

Thank you for your interest in taking the EMT-Basic class.  Everyone who joins our class enters a new and exciting phase in their life and becomes an asset to their family, friends, and community.

My name is Anne Zuercher.  I am an EMT-B with Tremont Rescue 702 (since 1981) and a state certified Lead Instructor for the state of Illinois (since 1998).  I am an RN employed at OSF-SFMC.  My e-mail address is rescu6@gmail.com; phone (309) 696-6829.

Tremont Rescue 702 hosts a 120-hour EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Basic class on a regular basis.  Please contact me for the dates and times of the next class.  It is a 12-week course with two 5-hour classes each week.  This requires commitment and preparation.  You won’t regret your decision.

Classes are lecture/instruction with hands-on teaching.  Clinical time of an additional 16 hours in the Emergency Department and ambulance internship is also required.  Class is held at the Tremont Fire Station at 300 S. Sampson St.  Class size is limited to 15 students.

In addition to the 120 hours of classroom instruction, you must complete 16 hours of clinical time.  Eight hours must be in an ED, the other eight hours may be on an approved ALS ambulance or in the ED.  Included in the class is the Medication class the EMT-B can administer in the PAEMS system.  You are allowed to miss a maximum of three (3) classes with excused absences.

This class is governed by the Peoria Area EMS (PAEMS) office and IDPH.  The content is the National Standard Curriculum from the NHTSA.  The website for the EMS office is www.paems.org.  Other info is available on the IDPH website.

You must be certified in CPR for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association (AHA) prior to class. Contact Sara Garman at (309) 840-3286 for CPR class info.  Due the first night of class is the fee of $150.00 for Tremont residents and $550.00 for non-residents for the course, which includes the textbook.  You will not receive your textbook until payment is made to Tremont Rescue 702.  Tremont residents who join Rescue 702 may be reimbursed for the class fee after 1 year of continuous service as explained in the squad’s Policy Manual.

I also need a copy of your high school diploma or GED before you can take the state or national licensure test at the completion of the course.  A background check will be done prior to any scheduled clinical time.  There is a nominal fee for this.

Applicants must be 18 years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent to qualify to take the exam for state licensure.  High school seniors may start the class prior to their 18th birthday but can’t take the licensure exam until after they are 18 years of age.

I understand this all seems overwhelming, but don’t panic!  We take it a day at a time and work our way through the knowledge and skills needed.  The best way you can assure success is to attend every class and read the textbook.  Give me a call or e-mail with any questions.
